Invader, our well-known French artist, has shown his expertise in storytelling, visual presentation, and language with his versatile publications of books. In this blog, we will be exploring the Exhibition Catalogs.

Exhibition Catalogs

Invader’s Exhibition Catalogs are essentially catalogs of exhibitions previously exhibited. However, not every exhibition is lucky enough to receive a book, as there are about 75 exhibitions and group shows that were launched successfully in the past 2 decades according to Invader’s exhibition list, and only 10 of them have a catalog dedicated to it. In addition, every exhibition catalog has a limited supply, making it sought-after and valuable. Below, we will be diving into all the exhibitions in which Invader has made an exhibition catalog for.

Rubik Space

Rubik Space is an exhibition by Invader in 2005 in Galerie Patricia Dorfmann, Paris, France. In this exhibition, Invader presents the new art style he pioneered, RubikCubsim. The exhibition opens up new territory of intervention of Rubik's Cubes, which merges pixelation and physical operation, opening his work to sculpture and offering the invasion of a new dimension.

Bad Men Part 1 and 2

Bad Men Part 1 and 2 exhibitions were held in 2 different locations in the same year, 2007. They were Galerie Joellenbeck, Cologne, Germany, and Lazarides Gallery, London, UK respectively. Developing on the idea of art with Rubik’s Cubes, Invader created a series of artworks depicting simply bad men. This is a big step for Invader as his art evolved from simple shapes of color into cubism-inspired portraits that combine realism and abstract art.

Beton Blumen

Beton Blumen is an exhibition in 2008 held at MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, Austria. It is unclear why Invader picked this as one of the exhibition catalog, as the exhibition itself is nothing special. It is believed that one of the reasons the exhibition catalogue was created was due to the 3 Invaders installed near the museum exterior, WN_48-50 to be specific, and the bridge also near the museum that was commissioned to be invaded with the blue and black pattern.

Top 10

Situated in Jonathan Levine Gallery, New York, USA, TOP 10 was an exhibition held in 2009 that featured album covers of 80s music in a Rubikcubism style, in particular a showcase of Invader’s ten favorite albums. The exhibition catalogue goes into more detail on Invader’s favourite albums, with behind-the-scenes and making-of-the art included.

It is a revelation, a self-evidence, the square format and the jacket photos work perfectly with the RubikCubism technique.

Low Fidelity

In the same year, 2009, in Lazarides Gallery, London, UK, Low Fidelity exhibition took place. The title references the low quality and minimum visual details of either an art form or technology. In this case, it refers to the cubism nature of Rubikcubism works featured in this exhibition and also the QR Codes art displayed.

Alias

This isn’t necessarily an exhibition catalog, because there isn’t an exhibition titled Alias in 2016. Instead, Alias is published by Over the Influence, a gallery located in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and Bangkok. The book was available at their booth during Art Central in 2016. It is believed that it is the fair is situated in the Hong Kong division of Over the Influence.

In 2017 at le Musée en Herbe, Paris, France, the Hello My Game Is… exhibition took place. The exhibition lets fans immerse themselves in Invader’s world, allowing them to interact with the artist’s work through a thematic tour that showcases more than a hundred new works. It is a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of one of the pioneers of street art, whose work has often been referred to as the world of childhood. The exhibition catalog published by Casterman features games and puzzles that are supposed to be played during the exhibition, fulfilling and completing the quests in the book as visitors explore the exhibition.

Prints on Paper

4000 is a solo exhibition that took place at Over the Influence, Paris, France in 2022-2023, and is a celebration of the 4000 Space Invaders installed worldwide. Every piece displaced is an Alias, which are replicas of street pieces intended for the art market. For those who are wondering about the book describing all 4000 Invaders, the book is an Invasion Guide, instead of an exhibition catalog. The two books are different.

Invader Space Station

In 2024, in rue Béranger, Paris, France, the Invader Space Station Exhibition took place. The exhibition featured multiple floors worth of Invader's works. It was also the past office of Libération, the French newspaper. Invader has teased the release of this book in August 2024, as he mentioned he was working on a new book. This has led to wide speculation of the new book being the exhibition catalog for the ISS, the Invader Space Station.
